Keywords

Keywords are the words that portray and describe the purpose of your site. Keywords and keyword phrases are both helpful in getting your idea across. For example, you can attract attention with the word ‘dog’, or you can say ‘dog shelter’ or‘Boston Terrier’. By choosing keywords and keyword phrases of varying specificity, you can cover a broad range of ideas and help people to find you more readily.

Keywords are usually between one and five word phrases that people may use to search for information on the web. There are much longer phrases which come once in a while. However, you start off with one word and type it into the search engine. If you don’t find what you’re looking for then you search with 2 keywords, then 3 then 4 then 5. How often have you ever used a keyword phrase with more than 5 words? However they are good for some, like model names: Sony viao VGN-N21E/W notebook laptop or even digital camera, like Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 digital camera.

These are long keywords which specify a model. If people are looking for something as specific as the keywords above, then what are the chances they will buy?

Longer keywords are easier to get rankings with because they most likely to have less competition, ultimately
less people searching for it. By being specific, you target your audience. With the keyword phrase, ‘colorful buttons’, you may attract people looking to sew buttons on a shirt, and people who are looking for designs or downloads for buttons on their website. You can target the audience you want with additional words in your keyword phrase.

Overlapping keywords are another option with multiple word keyword phrases. This allows you to tap into several keywords in one phrase. For example, I might use personal injury compensation attorney’. This covers the following keywords:

1-
Personal injury

2-
Personal injury compensation

3-
Injury compensation

4-
Compensation

5-
Compensation attorney

6-
Attorney

Keyword research can be approached from many angles, and you must find the way that works best for you. My method works well for me and has given me spectacular results. This method of research may not be the ideal way for you to choose the best keywords for your site. Because keywords are very important to success with the search engines, you must have a good strategy.
Merely packing your site with a large amount of keywords that seem to relate to your site is not going to achieve the results you require. If it was that simple, everyone would be able to do it. That is obviously not the case, as the number of people striving for rankings shows that not everyone can make the first page.

Think about the popularity of a keyword phrase when you use them. For example, if you target an extremely common word, such as ‘quality’, you will get enormous
amounts of matches, that are likely to be irrelevant and all over a wide range of fields.

Quality may still be a good word to use in conjunction with another word, or as a part of your website without being used as a keyword. An example of altering the keyword
phrase would be to say, ‘quality tires’ or ‘quality herbal supplements’.

Pay attention to your audience. You may sell a product that you refer to as a diffuser. You may miss out on a big chunk of your potential market if you do not also use a keyword such as ‘humidifier’. Even if the target audience is incorrect in the name they give your product or service, make sure that you meet their needs and provide any name or acronym they may associate with it in your keyword phrases.

Oddly enough, misspelling keywords may be a good idea. How many times have you
accidentally misspelled a keyword when typing it into a search engine?

Beyond this mishap that can still lead your customers, and maybe your competitor’s customers, directly to your site; there is one other obvious reason to include
misspellings. Frankly, some of your users probably do not spell well.

Whether they are using the language as a second language, or they simply failed.English in high school, there are a lot of people who do not spell well. Do not leave
them in the dark, but lead them gently to your site despite their spelling errors.

Misspelled Keywords - A Word of Caution!

The down side of capturing the people who misspell their search with keywords is that you have to use the misspelling in the text of your website. Nothing
reduces your credibility like poor spelling or grammar. How, then, can you tap into this market without looking like an absolute idiot? Consider using a trick used by many websites. You can say something to the effect of, “Were you looking for ‘lip gloss’ when you typed ‘lip glos’?”

Keyword Density

Keyword density has been replaced by keyword relevance especially by Google. Keyword relevance is currently the best way to achieve success. You need to have content that matches the keywords. Beyond this, you need to include alternate keywords. Search engines do not merely look for a single keyword, but they have the ability to track the accompanying keywords that are general included along with the main keyword in relevant sites. Because of this, your inclusion of related keywords indicates to the search engines that your content is relevant and that they entire page content is related to the searchers query.

Now if those words are missing, the search engine may assume that you merely threw the keyword together and stuck it into a site that doesn’t have much to offer the searcher.

For example, a site selling baby items may be expected to have the words, ‘crib’,‘stroller’, ‘infant care’, or similar words. By limiting your keywords to ‘baby items’,you give the search engines a clue that you do not have much information to offer or in that instance you’re not ‘totally’ an authority.

You may also want to consider the terms that may be included for global markets. For example, in the U.S., the word ‘stroller’ is used. On the other hand, in the U.K.,the word ‘pram’ is common for the same item. Be careful not to put the words in if there is no purpose for them, but if you are building a quality site with good content, these keywords should be natural inclusions.

To get a feel for this concept, use the “~” symbol before entering a keyword in the Google search. Use the example ‘stroller’. When you perform the search, other relevant keywords will appear in bold. You will see words like ‘jogger’, ‘buggy’, and ‘pram’.

Also ensure you cater for your target market. For example if you can only target users in the UK then pram would be the best term to use otherwise a stroller to some women maybe confusing. So consider who your target audience is as well.

Keywords in Meta Tags

It can be tempting to use about 30 keywords in a meta tag in an attempt to create a large net. Better results can be achieved by refining the pages and using 6 to 12 keywords per page. By employing the main keyword with secondary keywords strategy, you are in a good position to set up a page with keywords of a reasonable volume in the meta tag.

Keyword Tips

We have already discussed choosing specific keywords through adding words to the keyword phrases. Another factor is the specificity of the terms themselves. A generic term that once held weight may put a website out of the game because it is simply way to general. There are ways to target your specific market and remain at the top of your field. For example, if you provide a service in a specific geographic location, you can use keywords to target the place.

One of my sites targets the U.K. specifically and so this addition to keyword phrases can aid in locating clients that want my services. Gaining rankings with a generic term requires a great deal of energy and may not give you significant results. In order to get to the top of the rankings with a generic term, it will be necessary to use extremely aggressive SEO techniques to compete with fields other than your own.

For example, if you want to rise to the top with the term, ‘attorneys’, you will be forced to compete with attorneys from every geographic location and in every specialized field of the law. This is a huge market and the competition is fierce.

Not only will you have to compete with everyone in the field, but your results will contain people who do not want to use your services. Perhaps a person from California turns up your search results. If you are an attorney without a license to practice law in California and you have no referral contacts, it is merely a waste of your time and bandwidth to have this user on your site.

Eyeing the Competition

Do your own search to check out the competition. Stay on top of your field by staying up to date about the status of the competition. Everyone is running this marathon race and trying to stay in the lead or get in the lead. You don’t want to spend too much time looking over your shoulder, but you need to have a general idea about how things are progressing.

The first general indicator comes from simply performing some searches you think a user would do. See how many sites come up, and in what order. Keep an eye on someone who is rising quickly and see what they are doing so successfully.

The following research techniques are available to research keywords:

1-
Put yourself in your customer or client’s shoes and think about what they might look for

2-
Read the content on competitors sites to find the keywords

3-
Review the words typed into a site level search to see what people are looking for

4-
Check the keywords on the major search engines

5-
Use tools available from the search engines

6-
Use free tools that help people find terms

7-
Use keyword suggestion tools

Keyword Details… Details… Details

The details can make or break some searches on the internet. For example, a small typo in a URL can take you from your favorite forum to a very unsavory site that you would prefer not to have in your computer history. Fortunately, the search engines are trying to make it a little easier for users to find what they are looking for.

For example, dashes used to be considered in a search, but they are generally seen as a space now. Upper case and lower case are not considered in search results. Details can be very important, but some specifics have less significance than they did years ago.

Did you know: If you search a keyword directly into the URL address bar, depending on which search engine is your default it will directly bring up the first site listed in their search automatically.
