Directories Submission

Choose the directories you are targeting by understanding which search engines and directories interact in such a way as to promote the SEO strategy you have employed. Take the time to make sure you are submitting your website into the appropriate category.
Follow the instructions for submission closely so that you will not lose effectiveness because you overlooked a minor detail. By taking the time to submit your site properly, you will be able to use this resource to its fullest. When a search engine finds your site by following links from another site, you will be able to get an unpaid submission into a directory.
There are tricks that will help you get better results than if you simply go with the flow and let things settle out as they may.
Only submit to directories initially when you set up a new site. If you start submitting to directories after your site is established, it could have a reverse effect. Meaning you could get penalized or de-indexed.
Many directories will allow you to submit your site in multiples after paying a fee.The fee can be worth it or not.
Some directories will allow you to enter a keyword as your site name and some will not. If they do, take advantage of the opportunity. Some will automatically pick up your site information by completing your URL. You should change them slightly or else each submission will be the same. The point is to get different versions of submissions.
You want to get unique directories, rather than hundreds of listings with the same information. Be creative and use variations. Be careful not to stuff the keyword section, but use your main keywords. The keywords that get the most traffic should be used and limited to approximately ten.
Submit your site to directories over time. For example, if you have a list of 600 sites, submit to fifty sites per week. This will allow for a natural progression of listings and a gradual addition of back links to your site.List of DirectoriesDMOZ
This is the Open Directory Project and it is free. This is one of the oldest, biggest and highest quality directories. Links from this directory are very good if it is a good fit for your business. It will not be worth your time and effort if it does not fit into your overall marketing plan.
Although it has a lot of good qualities, it can be a long process to get listed. You have to submit your site accurately and follow all guidelines carefully.
DMOZ is connected to many sites and once you achieve inclusion, you will have access to many links. One advantage to submitting to DMOZ is that you can apply to become an editor. If you have expertise in your field and have a lot to offer, you may be able to be an editor. This is the basis for the directory since the editors are not paid for their work. The benefits of becoming an editor include gaining editing privileges in your category, and eventually in others as well. They are looking for people who are not performing editorial duties in order to further their own business, but people who are trying to further the cause of the directory and improve it.
The Yahoo! Directory
Submission to the Yahoo! directory is separate from obtaining search results from Yahoo! Do not think that getting results will get you into the directory. A commercial site must pay for inclusion in this directory. This is another example of an expense that must be analyzed in your start up costs and you must decide if it is something you can afford and if the pay off makes up for the cost.
Yahoo! lists non commercial sites free of charge. Upon submission, an editor reviews the site. Your rankings with Yahoo! may increase once you are listed. While this may make little difference for some businesses, it can fit in quite nicely with a business that is targeting Yahoo! as a search engine. There is still a significant market for Yahoo! in spite of the popularity of Google.

Niche Directories
Many webmasters find niche directories to be a great way to reach a ‘target’audience. There are many directories that cater to specific industries, or genera areas of business. When choosing a niche directory, like any other, you need to keep your overall marketing goals in the back of your mind. So if you have a dog website …use a dog niche directory.
The first consideration is whether or not your site will be accepted in a category. Do not waste your time on a long shot as once its lost it can not be re-found. You should also ask yourself what they can provide for you. As with other directories, review how many links they have in the categories, review the sites that are participating for quality, and see how many links are available per category. Make sure the directory is a good match for your business and that there are qualifications present that make it worthy of linking with your site.
Directories to Avoid
Just like good directories to be in there are also directories to avoid. Do not make the mistake of assuming that links with any directory are good. There is a possibility that a webmaster has devised a directory to further his own purposes.
This will give you an overabundance of low quality links and the problems that come with that. Some directories offer nothing while gladly taking your money or linking a lot of garbage links to your site.
If there is an obvious lack of high quality sites, you should consider that a warning sign that the directory may not be good for you. After reviewing a sample of the directory listings, you should have a pretty good idea what you are dealing with. If you see some good sites, the cost for submission could be a good investment.
A directory with blank categories or paid listings only is not what you are looking for.Keep looking for better directories as this is easy using Google. Search by ‘keyword’ +directory.
Otherwise not only does this indicate a problem with the directory, but you could be linking up with something that could be detrimental to your rankings.
Another warning sign from the directories that highlight ‘spammy’ sites. You do not want to link your name with low quality sites.Beware of directories requiring a reciprocal link. This practice shows that the
directory is not functioning as a directory should. The point of a directory is to list sites, and a directory that asks for links should be questioned for motivations.
The exception, once again, is with niche directories that have high quality links and a structure that is improved by reciprocal links. There are also sites with great authority in the same topic area as you are also usually safe to provide reciprocal links with.
