Definition of Religious Education Religious education is the many ways in which people of every age intentionally Re/shape themselves or are deliberately re/shaped by others to become more religious. As will be further explained, the movement of becoming more religious, or religious growth,takes on various dimensions. This transformation includes the various approaches that teachers and leaders facilitate this development, as well as the numerous avenues in which people seek out improvement—often self-directed—in their own religious life. By religious I mean not only relating to faithful devotion to the deity, or God, but also to an acknowledged ultimate reality that may or may not be divine, but is manifest in common characteristics regardless. Those characteristics are easiest described as love: love of God or creation or that which is greater than us, and love of our neighbors, our fellow human beings, with whom we share a locality and a planet. Without getting into a deep theological discourse, this definition relies heavily on the concepts of love and religion being so closely intertwined as to be inseparable. As the Greatest Commandment demands so much more than obedience, religion calls for a lot more than morality.
